Dear Optimist Club President,
The most important thing in education is to teach young people to think for themselves. Inspired by Albert Schweitzer’s words, Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) has sought out, recognized and developed leadership potential in high school sophomores for more than 50 years. In order to continue this mission in Maryland, we need the support of concerned citizens like you.
Our local HOBY organization, the Maryland Leadership Seminar Foundation Inc., is in its 38th year of providing leadership opportunities for the young people of Maryland. Since our inception, we have provided leadership training for nearly 6,000 youth. Each high school in Maryland, public and private, is invited to select one sophomore “ambassador” to represent his or her school at our four-day seminar.
HOBY Maryland’s $102,000 annual budget is funded entirely by businesses, civic organizations and individuals. As part of this effort, we would greatly appreciate a donation on your part towards sponsoring students to attend our seminar, June 10-13, 2021 via our HOBY Connect Virtual Platform. As an all-volunteer organization, we can guarantee that 100% of your donation goes directly to benefit those involved in our programs.
How Optimist Clubs Can Help
Student Recruitment – Please call your local high school’s guidance counselor or principal to make sure that a sophomore student does not miss this opportunity. Schools can find more information about registering a student by visiting HOBY.org/leadership-seminars-school-info.
Volunteer Support – The HOBY State Leadership Seminar in your state is a 100% volunteer effort, and new volunteers are always welcome! Because there are a variety of opportunities available, you are sure to find a role that suits your unique talents and interests. Consider serving on the corporate board, the seminar planning committee, or as an adult facilitator for a group of students at the seminar. Other roles include assistance with student recruitment, program development, fundraising, and facilities and operations coordination.
Financial Support – Please consider a financial donation to help fund our leadership and volunteer oriented four-day event A full sponsorship is $270 for 2021. If a partial is all you can afford, please still help. No donation is too small! Or too large for that matter.
